World Press Photo 50 years : World Press Photo celebrates its 50th anniversary in Amsterdam in the weekend of 7 and 8 October. The Dutch foundation's mission is to encourage high professional standards in photojournalism on a wide international scale. The anniversary weekend focuses on the past, present and future of press photography. Many premier award winners, former jury members and key industry representatives will travel to Amsterdam to take part in the celebrations. The initial World Press Photo contest was held and the first exhibition opened in December 1955 in Amsterdam. This one-off event soon became an annual fixture and today, World Press Photo organizes the biggest and most prestigious photography contest in the world.
