Ampex digital video recorder patents to Samsung : Ampex Corp. today announced that it has concluded a license agreement with Samsung Electronics, based in Korea, permitting the use of several United States and foreign patents held by Ampex in the manufacture and sale of digital video tape recorders, including MiniDV camcorders. The license agreement also permits Samsung to use certain Ampex patents in other camcorders utilizing hard disc drive, optical or solid-state memories. The terms of the license are confidential. Pursuant to the license, Ampex will receive during its third fiscal quarter a negotiated payment totaling approx. $2.75 million to settle liability for past use of its patents prior to conclusion of the agreement.

Nikon D70, D70s and D50 digital SLR output boost : Japan's Nikon Corp. is considering boosting production capacity at its digital single lens reflex camera factory in Thailand to meet rapidly growing demand, a company executive said on Thursday. In an interview with Reuters, senior managing director Makoto Kimura said the company was mulling a plan to enlarge its Thailand factory, which employs about 10,000 workers and produces most of Nikon's digital SLRs sold worldwide. Boosting sales of digital SLRs is central to Nikon's strategy of shifting away from the low end of the market, where pricing pressure is fiercest. Digital SLRs fetch higher profit margins and allow Nikon to leverage its lens technology and long history in film SLRs.

(TAEC), announced their response today to the July 8, 2005 Statement of Decision issued by the Honorable Jack Komar, presiding judge in the trade secret lawsuit with Lexar over claimed NAND Flash-related trade secret misappropriation. Toshiba invented NAND Flash memory technology and has been a pioneer throughout its development. Flash memory remains a strategic product for Toshiba Corporation and one in which Toshiba owns original technologies.

Sanyo cuts digital camera production costs : Struggling Japanese electronics maker Sanyo Electric Co. Ltd. said on Monday it was making big strides in cutting digital camera production costs and was on track to hit its output target for this year. In an interview with Reuters, Morihiro Kubo, head of the company's camera division, also unveiled plans to double sales of its own-brand cameras by increasing output of its "Xacti C" series that can take both still pictures and video. Sanyo is one of the world's largest producers of digital cameras, but it supplies about 95 percent of its output to other companies such as Nikon Corp. and Olympus Corp. under original equipment manufacturer (OEM) agreements.

Court reinstates patent lawsuit filed by SanDisk : SanDisk Corporation announced today that the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit (CAFC) on July 8, reversed a summary judgment ruling of non-infringement by a California District Court regarding SanDisk's U.S. Patent No. 5,602,987 (“'987 Patent”). As a result of the CAFC decision, SanDisk will renew the prosecution of its infringement claims against Ritek, Pretec & Memorex flash memory cards. The CAFC ruling supports SanDisk’s interpretation of the key inventive features claimed in the ?987 patent, and thereby eliminates the primary non-infringement argument of Ritek, Pretec & Memorex. SanDisk expects to seek summary judgment of infringement against the accused company's.

Fast growth for Asia-Pacific digital camera market : The Asia-Pacific digital camera market experienced tremendous growth in 2004 during a regional economic recovery, reports In-Stat. Digital camera market revenue in the 15 countries in this region escalated by 14.2%, to US$5.26 billion, the high-tech market research firm said. The regional digital camera market is expected to continue growing strongly to US$7.3 billion in 2009. "The market escalation in 2004 was greatly fueled by strong domestic economic growth in the Asia-Pacific region," said Bryan Wang, In-Stat content manager in Asia. "As the Chinese market is still far from saturated, the momentum is expected to continue at least for the next several years."

Online purchases of digital cameras increases : Online shopping for consumer electronics products is gaining in popularity according to "The Demographics of Online vs. In-Person CE Shopping," a study recently released by the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA). While an average of five percent of all consumer electronics purchases are made online, certain product categories - including personal computing, digital cameras, wireless home networking devices and portable music players - each sell more than 10 percent of product through online channels. According to more than 1,000 U.S. adults surveyed by CEA, online CE shoppers report higher satisfaction with the purchase process than those who visited traditional stores.
