"As with many Lucidiom kiosk solutions, our Automated Photo Machine software has been customized for Ritz in order to maintain the Ritz brand. Lexmark donates printers and art software : Lexmark International, Inc. today announced the donation of the Lexmark PrintArt program to more than 500 public schools in New Hampshire. The contribution is valued at $70,000. Through the Lexmark philanthropic program, the company donates educational software, supplemental lesson plans and Lexmark printers to support art education. The Hampshire Alliance has partnered with Lexmark to ensure that New Hampshire schools are able to benefit from this program. NHAAE sent every public elementary, middle and high school information about the donation. School districts are only required to complete the donation form online and to provide federal tax identification to become part of the program.

UMAX Technologies drops price of scanners : UMAX Technologies today announced that it is dropping the price of its most popular models, with up to $300 off its UMAX PowerLook 1000, 1120 and 2100XL configurations and $30 off the newest UMAX Astra 6700. This move comes less than a month after the company announced a full line up of new consumer electronics including drawing tablets, mini hard drives, flash drives, and MP3 players. "These price drops make our award winning scanners even more competitive to help expand UMAX's presence in design agencies, photography studios, business offices and consumer homes," said Christabel Chen, director of marketing at UMAX Technologies.

HP and Seiko to develop large format printers : Seiko I Infotech today announced they have signed an original equipment manufacturer (OEM) agreement to jointly develop and market low solvent-based large-format printers intended primarily for the outdoor graphics printing market. The multi-year agreement allows HP to expand its product portfolio for graphics customers who need to produce moderate volumes of high-quality and highly durable outdoor applications such as signs, banners and vehicle graphics. Seiko will develop the new printers exclusively for HP using its extensive expertise and technology. Marketing, sales, distribution and supplies will be handled by HP. First products are expected to become available in 2006.


SmartDisk Acquires Zio Corporation

SmartDisk Corporation : A provider of portable, network and multimedia storage products and technologies, today announced that it has acquired the business and certain assets of Zio Corporation, a privately held market leader in digital media readers, video editing and mobile telephone products. Terms of the acquisition were not disclosed. Headquartered in California, Zio's products include the Dazzle, CameraMate and FoneMate brands and are sold through leading retailers in the U.S. and Europe. Plans call for Zio's U.S. offices and operations to be consolidated into the SmartDisk Fort Myers, Florida headquarters location. Key management personnel will remain at Zio to aid in the integration of the business and sales activities.

And now, with the growth of digital cameras, we have CDs, DVDs, computer hard drives and e-mail boxes that are overflowing with digital photos and videos as well. It's true, according to a national consumer survey of 2,000 American adults, sponsored by Imation Corp, Americans are embracing digital technologies to capture and share their memories. Even so, many Americans have yet to fully master the more complex digital application skills, such as editing or digital scrapbooking.

Canon buys NEC Machinery Corp. : Canon, Japan's top copier and digital camera maker, announced that it will pay about 5.1 billion yen ($46 million) to buy 54 percent of NEC Machinery Corp. a unit of NEC Corp. Canon said NEC Machinery, a maker of chip-manufacturing equipment, possessed advanced manufacturing technologies for automation equipment and the acquisition would help Canon speed up its on-going cost-cutting effort. Canon will pay 1,212 yen a share for NEC Machinery, a 21 percent premium to its 1,000 yen closing price. "It's a positive move. I think it was a cheap, good purchase," said Mizuho Securities analyst Ryosuke Katsura. "This goes along with Canon's plan to further cut costs in production, and it found a good deal."

IDC study of American digital camera owners : While number of digital images captured increases rapidly, consumers' printing behavior changes. The number of aggregate digital images captured per month continued to grow another 18 points in 2005, largely driven through cheaper flash memory card prices and increased capacities, IDC found in a new study of USA digital camera owners' usage habits. As a result, the total number of average monthly prints is expected to increase by 29% in 2005. However, printing behavior is changing with home printing continuing to decline in favor of retail locations. IDC is the premier global market intelligence and advisory firm in the information technology and telecommunications industries.

BenQ reported 42% drop in projectors and phones : BenQ has posted a 42% drop in gross profits in the second quarter as shipments for its high margin products - handsets and projectors fell last quarter. In Australia BenQ has cut most advertising and is rationalising its product mix. Sale and return notebook deals with Harvey Norman and a less than succesful deal with EDS for notebooks is believed to be impacting BenQ bottom line. LCD TV's and monitors are strong along with projector sales. The company's overall gross margins fell to 9.4%, down from 11.3% in the first quarter, but the company remains positive about the third quarter and expects sales to increase more than 10% sequentially, up from $1.21 billion in the second quarter.

Pursuant to a restructuring program and consistent with marketplace demand, current actions include: Consolidate color photographic paper manufacturing for USA at plants in Windsor and Harrow, England, resulting in the closure of an operation in Rochester by the end of October. Close by year-end an operation in Rochester that recycles polyester waste and part of an operation that processes polyester raw material in the manufacturing of Estar polyester film base.
