Lexar responds to lawsuit by Fujifilm : Lexar Media, a leading manufacturer and marketer of high-performance digital media and accessories, today responded to litigation initiated by Fuji Photo Film Co., and Fuji Photo Film USA, Fuji filed a lawsuit against Lexar, alleging that certain of Lexar's flash cards infringe Fuji's U.S. Patent No.'s 5,303,198; 5,386,539; and 5,390,148. Fuji seeks damages and injunctive relief in this litigation, which was filed in United States District Court for the Southern District of New York on September 2005. "We believe that litigation is a tactical move in response to the ongoing patent infringement case that Lexar brought against Fuji over three years ago, in July 2002.

Photo Imaging Market China rises Unit sales of traditional film cameras in China rose 38% year-on-year in 2004 as a result of the “camera seeding” program being aggressively promoted by Kodak and other major sensitized product manufacturers. Film sales also rose, although only 5.8% as heavy film users in the Eastern Coastal cities switched their photography activities to digital. At the same time, sales of Digital Still Cameras jumped 233%. Other products/services reviewed include: color photographic paper and chemistry, minilabs, kiosks, online finishing, and minilab shop operations. These are some of the conclusions of the comprehensive 41-page report from Photofinishing News, entitled The Photo-Imaging Market In China - 2005.

InfoTrends Western Europe largest camera market : Digital camera unit sales reached 22.5 million units in Western Europe in 2004 and the market is expected to grow by 32% in 2005, reaching 29.8 million units by year end. Although average selling prices for digital cameras declined in 2004, revenues increased by a staggering 42%. Revenues are expected to continue to increase by 29% in 2005 to total just over €10 billion. This makes Western Europe the largest digital camera market worldwide in terms of units sold and revenue. Household penetration of digital cameras remains quite low, reaching 26% in 2004. First time buyers dominated the market, representing 85% of all digital camera purchases.

Kodak mammography CAD software enhancements : Eastman Kodak Company today announced it has obtained FDA approval for enhancements to its mammography computer-aided detection (CAD) system. New software for the Kodak Mammography CAD System increases the system’s sensitivity to microcalcification clusters while reducing the number of false positive markers. The enhanced software is now available. This is the first update to software for the CAD system, which was launched only ten months ago. Existing customers receive software upgrades as part of Kodak’s standard one-year warranty. "Kodak is pleased to provide another digital tool in the fight against breast cancer," said Wido Menhardt, General Manager of the Kodak CAD Business.

ImageLink compatible cameras and printers hit the market : One year after the announcement of the ImageLink print system - a specification designed to simplify at-home picture printing - new cameras and printers supporting the standard are being released. Joining a host of Kodak EasyShare cameras and printer docks already released this year, Olympus has announced the Camedia C315 zoom digital camera, the Olympus D555 zoom digital camera and ILP-100 printer dock which are all ImageLink compatible. "Since the ImageLink print system was announced last September by Kodak and a group of the world’s largest consumer digital photography companies, the response has been overwhelming,” said Yusuke Kojima, vice president Kodak Japan Ltd.

Sony Europe appoints new president Fujio Nishida : Sony Corporation today announced that Chris Deering, President of Sony Europe has decided to retire from Sony, in order to pursue personal opportunities in the US, where his family now resides. Effective November 1, Mr. Deering will be succeeded by Fujio Nishida, who currently serves as Corporate Executive, in charge of Electronics Marketing at Sony Corporation in Tokyo. Deering and Nishida will work closely together to facilitate a smooth transition of responsibilities, after which Mr. Deering will continue to work with the company in a consulting capacity. Fujifilm researches camera phone printing : Fuji Photo Film U.S.A., Inc. today released findings from a camera phone behavior study completed by NPD Techworld, a division of the NPD Group, Inc., revealing that 44.6% of participants said they have taken pictures with their camera phone that they wished they had printed. The most commonly noted reasons for not printing these images included image quality, simplicity of process and overall perceived cost. The study, based on a survey of more than 400 U.S. camera phone owners, points to a significant opportunity for retailers to capitalize on the printing potential from accelerating adoption rates of camera phones and the growth in mobile imaging.

Consumer electronic sales rises by 9% : Digital cameras, flat panels, communications devices and MP3 players continue to drive consumer electronics (CE) industry sales growth as evidenced in figures released today by the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA) in its revised U.S. Consumer Electronics Sales and Forecast Report. According to Market Research, total CE factory-to-dealer sales in 2005 are projected to increase 9% on revenues of $123 billion. CEA reported that final year-end figures indicate total industry sales grew 10% in 2004, totaling $113 billion in revenues.
