Sony opens mobile electronics technology center

Sony opens mobile electronics technology center : Sony Electronics unveiled its newly relocated Mobile Electronics Technology Center (METC) at its corporate headquarters in San Diego. The METC is a preeminent installation facility used to test Sony's in-car entertainment products, conduct installations for Sony's show vehicles and provide support to all of its authorized dealers. "The Mobile Electronics Technology Center allows Sony to stay in touch with the car audio market and helps us deliver real-time support to our Xplod dealers across the United States," says Andrew Sivori, general manager of Sony's Mobile Electronics division. "With the METC, Sony can continually develop and evaluate products for our customer."

Sony to establish ST Mobile Display Corporation : Sony Corporation establish ST Mobile Display Corporation (STMD). This follows Sony's purchase of the LCD panel manufacturing business previously owned by International Display Technology (IDTech). The new company will produce low-temperature polysilicon thin film transistor liquid crystal displays (LTPS-TFT-LCD) panels for mobile products. LTPS-TFT-LCD panels are used in various mobile products such as video cameras, digital still cameras and mobile telephones. Following ST Liquid Crystal Display Corp (STLCD), a joint venture between Sony and Toyota Industries Corporation, Sony will position STMD as the 2nd manufacturing base of LTPS-TFT-LCD panel for mobile products.

Sony acquires IDTech's Yasu LCD manufacturer : Sony and Chi Mei Optoelectronics (CMO) have agreed on the basic terms of a transaction whereby Sony will acquire CMO's wholly-owned Japanese subsidiary, International Display Technology (IDTech). Sony and CMO have agreed that Sony will purchase all the shares of a new company spun-off from IDTech. Sony plans to produce low-temperature polysilicon thin film transistor liquid crystal (LTPS-TFT-LCD) display panels in the new company. The acquisition price has been set at approximately 18.5 Billion Japanese Yen for all the shares of the new company and includes purchase of all of the production equipment, facilities, and personnel at IDTech's plant in Yasu-shi, Shiga prefecture, Japan.
