Sony CCD image sensor faulty : It has recently come to our attention that a limited number of Sony Digital Still Cameras that incorporate an image sensor device, CCD Chip, manufactured from October 2002 through March 2004 may exhibit the following condition: When the Digital Still Camera is used in camera mode, the LCD panel or electronic viewfinder will show either a distorted image or no image. We have determined that this condition only occurs to a limited number of units. Accordingly, customers who have a Sony Digital Still Camera as outlined below and if said Sony Still Camera exhibits the above-mentioned condition caused by the image sensor device, CCD chip, may contact the special call center set forth below for free repair.

Sony Europe appoints new president Fujio Nishida : Sony Corporation today announced that Chris Deering, President of Sony Europe has decided to retire from Sony, in order to pursue personal opportunities in the US, where his family now resides. Effective November 1, Mr. Deering will be succeeded by Fujio Nishida, who currently serves as Corporate Executive, in charge of Electronics Marketing at Sony Corporation in Tokyo. Deering and Nishida will work closely together to facilitate a smooth transition of responsibilities, after which Mr. Deering will continue to work with the company in a consulting capacity. Deering was appointed President of Sony Europe in April 2004 after successful career at Sony Computer Entertainment Europe.

Sony researchers create 'curious' Aibo robot dog : Sony Corp. has succeeded in giving selected Aibo pet robots curiosity, researchers at Sony Computer Science Laboratory (SCSL) say. Their research won't lead to conscious robots soon, if ever, but it could help other fields such as child developmental psychology, they said during an open day in Tokyo. More than 50 years ago Alan Turing, considered by many to be the father of computer science, speculated about the possibility of creating synthetic consciousness. Progress has been made with AI (artificial intelligence) systems, which have typically used task-defined learning algorithms.

Sony Electronics opens three new Style stores : Sony is opening three new Sony Style stores this week, rounding out its fiscal year with a total of 15 of the new concept stores nationwide. The stores, due to open at Westfield Valley Fair Mall, San Jose, Calif.; Fashion Valley Mall, San Diego; and Woodfield Mall, Schaumburg, Ill, are designed to inspire consumers to integrate technology and entertainment into their lifestyles. Scheduled to open March 22nd, 24th and 26th, respectively, each approximately 6,000-square-foot store will encourage consumers to test-drive a variety of Sony devices like digital cameras and experience firsthand their seamless interaction with digital entertainment content.
