Photographer Patrick Lichfield died : Thomas Patrick John Anson, 5th Earl of Lichfield was a professional photographer who inherited the Earldom of Lichfield from his paternal grandfather, but did not use his title in his professional practise, where he was known as Patrick Lichfield. With a string of titles and photographic achievements to his name, Patrick Lichfield is one of the most highly acclaimed photographers of all time. Whilst he himself represents part of British royal heritage, he remains a professional, and has undertaken the photography of every European royal family. His most famous commission came from The Prince of Wales and Lady Diana Spencer when he was appointed as their official photographer.

China cameras hit global market : The global digital camera business was estimated to be worth US$24 billion in 2004. A significant part of this business comes from mainland China and Taiwan, regions which have become known as major digital camera supply bases over the past few years. Industry analysts regard mainland China as being the primary source of low-cost digital cameras. Taiwan, for its part, is credited with a 30 percent share of the digital camera market, following industry leader Japan. According to the China Culture & Office Equipment Professional Association, mainland China produced 73 million digital cameras in 2004. This report covers 66 digital camera manufacturers in mainland China and Taiwan.

Photo Imaging Market China rises Unit sales of traditional film cameras in China rose 38% year-on-year in 2004 as a result of the “camera seeding” program being aggressively promoted by Kodak and other major sensitized product manufacturers. Film sales also rose, although only 5.8% as heavy film users in the Eastern Coastal cities switched their photography activities to digital. At the same time, sales of Digital Still Cameras jumped 233%. Other products/services reviewed include: color photographic paper and chemistry, minilabs, kiosks, online finishing, and minilab shop operations. These are some of the conclusions of the comprehensive 41-page report from Photofinishing News, entitled The Photo-Imaging Market In China - 2005.

Interview with Vietnam and Iraq war photographers : Three of the finest war photographers of the last 40 years shared their views about the futility of war on Tuesday night without always agreeing on the state of combat photography today. The panelists in a discussion called "Journalists Under Fire: Vietnam and Iraq" at the University of California here were Don McCullin, an acclaimed British war photographer who dropped out of school as a young teenager and went on to cover more wars than he cares to count; Catherine Leroy, a French photographer who bought a one-way ticket to Saigon at 21; and David Leeson, who won the 2004 Pulitzer Prize for his photographs of Iraq.

Camera phone sales increased by 200% : According to the latest research from Strategy Analytics, 257 million camera phones were shipped worldwide, representing 38 percent of total handset sales, in 2004. This was up sharply from 84 million, or 16 percent of total, in 2003. Camera phones outsold digital still cameras by almost 4 to 1, reaching just 68 million units globally in 2004. Sales grew 40 percent annually, from 49 million units in 2003. "Global camera phone sales grew by an impressive 200 percent in 2004," said Neil Mawston, Associate Director at Strategy Analytics. "Nokia led the pack, with an 18 percent worldwide market share, followed closely by Motorola at 17 percent, and Samsung in third position at 13 percent."
