Worldwide digital camera revenue reach $24 Billion

According to a new study from InfoTrends/CAP Ventures, worldwide digital camera revenue is forecast to reach $24 billion in 2004, and grow to $31 billion in 2009. The top three regions for digital camera sales in 2004 are Europe, the United States and Japan. The market is growing quickly in Asia and Rest of World regions (ROW). The digital camera market in Japan has entered the late majority stage of adoption, and the U.S. and Europe will enter this stage within the next few years. Meanwhile, Asia and ROW will keep growing, up from a combined 10% share of worldwide revenue in 2004 to 33% by 2009. Sensor resolution continues to be the primary specification that consumers rely on to compare the performance and quality of digital cameras.


Online Photo Service usage continues to grow

This year, 26% of Internet users have had photos posted to an online photo service, up from 19% in 2003, according to a recent survey conducted by InfoTrends/CAP Ventures. There are currently over 825 million photos stored at online photo services, and sharing and printing activity continues to increase. A new print method is introducing more users to the online space. It involves uploading photos to an online site, and picking up the prints at a local retail store. Just a few consumers are using this approach today, but it will help raise awareness of online photo services in general as retailers market their online-to-retail services to their regular customers.


Inkjet popularity is fueling media growth

According to InfoTrends/CAP Ventures' research, nearly 80 million inkjet devices were installed last year, making this the dominant printer technology in the desktop arena. The number of inkjet multifunctional imaging devices installed in the U.S. is growing very quickly due to customers' desire for increased functionality within a single product. This increased desire has been a major enabler of the specialty media market. Out of the 116 billion prints produced on paper-based media by inkjet products in 2004, specialty media was used for nearly 30 billion of these prints. Commodity and specialty media are expected to experience steady growth between 2002 and 2007.


Growing importance of digital photography

Each year since 1997, InfoTrends/CAP Ventures has conducted surveys to track the adoption and usage of digital cameras. This year's survey of U.S. Internet households shows the penetration of digital cameras increasing to 59% of Internet households, up from 45% in 2003. As a result of rising penetration, the demographics of digital camera owners are shifting towards people of more moderate means. Additionally, women are increasingly more likely to own digital cameras and to spur the purchasing decision for the household. While the demographics of digital camera owners continue to shift towards representing the average Internet user, digital camera owners still show a greater tendency to acquire new technology than non-owners.


Consumer Digital Photo Printing Habits in detail

A new consumer study from InfoTrends/CAP Ventures reveals clear skies as well as clouds on the horizon for the digital photo printing industry. The short-term outlook for the photo print industry is good. Among the positive signs are that digital camera users who print photos are taking far more pictures than they ever did with film and printing far more "enlargements" (larger than 4" x 6" prints). In addition, these users expect their print volumes to increase in the future. On the other hand, excluding a few ultra-heavy users, the average photo print volumes and expenditures for digital camera users are currently no higher than film camera households.
