The Nikon D70 Digital SLR was named "Camera of the Year 2004" by the editors of Popular Photography & Imaging (Pop Photo) who called it "the camera that best refines or redefines photography." Pop Photo is the world's largest photography magazine. "For sheer technical virtuosity, there's the D70's color accuracy ... the best of any digital SLR we've ever tested," stated the current (December) issue of Pop Photo. Nikon Europe warns customers of stolen D70 kits

A number of Nikon D70 kits destined for Spain have been stolen from Schiphol Airport, Amsterdam, Netherlands, on July 17, 2004. The kits comprised of a D70 body with AF-S DX Nikkor 18-70G lens, battery, charger and English and Spanish language User manuals. Importantly they also carry a Warranty Card carrying the following address of Nikon's Spanish distributor Finicon S.A. Finicon S.A. C/ Ciencias, 81 Nave-8, Poligono Pedrosa, 08908 L'Hospitalet de LLobregat, Barcelona, Spain. A spokesman said: "Nikon would like to take the opportunity to warn the trade and customers to be wary about unrealistically low prices being offered for D70 bodies, 18-70mm lenses, batteries or chargers without retail packaging or valid warranty cards or manuals.

According to an article published in Nikkei Electronics Pentax will introduce a new friendly priced digital SLR camera probably introduced during Photokina, the great event to be hold in Cologne, Germany (28 September - October 2, 2004). This event promises to become a very interesting one; lots of rumours are already floating around and according to some inside information every digital enthusiast will be served at Photokina! Coming back to the Pentax SLR; Pentax USA has given a small official comment on the digital SLR topic: PENTAX Imaging Company, a division of PENTAX of America, Inc. has announced it is developing cameras for the entry level digital SLR category. The first introduction is slated for Fall of 2004.

TIPA awards the Sony Cyber-shot DSC-T1 camera

Sony has struck gold with the Cyber-shot T1, newly chosen as Europe's Best Digital Consumer Compact Camera in the prestigious Technical Image Press Association (TIPA) Awards. In judging the recent awards, the editors of the association's 30 member magazines agreed that the slim and stylish T1 "has some hugely impressive features which afford the photographer unprecedented levels of control". The award, from the top photographic and imaging titles in Europe, is a winning endorsement for the breakthrough design and optimised engineering behind this superb Cyber-shot camera. " We are of course delighted with the TIPA jury's decision in awarding Sony this TIPA prize," said Diederik Nederlof, General Manager of Sony Digital Imaging Europe.

Olympus UK announces a new price for the multi award-winning Olympus E-1 camera. From the 1st May 2004 the camera will be available at new RRPs of: Olympus E-1 body only: £999.00 (inc VAT) and Olympus E-1 kit (body and 14-54mm lens): £1,399.00 (inc VAT). We just had an opportunity to spend some hours with the new Pentax Optio MX camera, so we decided to get along and publish this first look. When we attended the PMA show in Las Vegas the Optio MX was suddenly unveiled. This strange looking compact digital camera reminds the veterans amongst us, of an ultra compact super 8 camera, but equipped with nowadays technique. The compact Optio MX camera is a digital camera combining film and video. The camera is equipped with a 1/2.7 inch CCD and offers 3.2 effective Megapixels, delivering a resolution of 2048x1536 pixels. This innovative, palm-sized Optio features a 10x optical zoom to capture still images and high resolution (VGA) full motion movies on MPEG4 format with zoom capability.

Olympus Corporation is pleased to announce the addition of three more firms to the roster of companies supporting the Four Thirds System standard for digital SLR camera systems. The three firms (in alphabetical order) are: Matsushita Electric Industrial Co., Ltd. (best known for its "Panasonic" brand products), Sanyo Electric Co., Ltd., and Sigma Corporation. The Four Thirds System standard continues to be open to all, and the participation of additional firms is being encouraged. The Four Thirds System standard defines a standard for the design and development of an entirely new generation of digital SLR camera systems.

The emphasis of the development work that is already in progress is on hybrid concepts that combine digital technology with proven analog products.
