Olympus E-3 Hands-On Review : Not even 3 weeks after returning from my trip to Kenya, where I attended the EOS Safari on the invitation of Canon, I found the next invitation on my digital doormat. This time it concerned an invitation from Olympus to Istanbul, Turkey, for the introduction of the long expected successor of the E1 to the press. Journalists from all over the world were flown into Turkey in groups to join the ten day event. Besides a number of Dutch colleagues, the Belgian and English press were also present during my stay. Upon our arrival at Istanbul's Atatürk airport a bus took us to the famous Topkapi palace. A guide gave us a tour through this beautiful cultural heritage and we were able to visit a few sections. Olympus E-3 DSLR
The Olympus E-3 is based on the FourThirds System. The first camera based on this system is the Olympus E-1, so far still a much belauded D-SLR camera thanks to its stability and solidness. The fact that a successor was coming up was known for at least a few years and I must admit that Olympus did not only leave us in suspense but also the FourThirds system camera photographer. And when the full specifications were announced it was still waiting for our first acquaintance with the E-3. Although the model I used in Istanbul during the E-3 event was not equipped with the final firmware (0.9) we still got permission to publish the test pictures made with this model. Do keep in mind that there is no end conclusion to be drawn as far as image quality is concerned because of the pre-production status of the model.
Olympus E3 Hands-On Review
My first acquaintance with the Olympus E-3 is positive. The expectations were quite high, also because it concerned a successor of the Olympus E-1 that already proved itself in practice. The Olympus E-1 may be looked upon as a semi-pro DSLR camera but got surpassed from all sides in the last few years. The one thing that remained through the years is its reliability and its solidness, features that are of indescribable value to a photographer.
Istanbul Turkey Grand Bazaar
We went to the Grand Bazaar. 'Grand' now is a relative expression but the Grand Bazaar is really grand and impressive! Inside the bazaar I worked without flash most of the time, relying on the high ISO settings of the camera. The AF system seems to work errorless and Live View also came in handy here. At one point inside the Turkish Grand Bazaar we visited a small shop offering a demonstration with the intelligent wireless flash system of Olympus. In a corner of the shop, behind a water pipe, the Olympus flash had been set up. My E-3 camera activated this flash, but not before the correct setting for the light situation as found in the shop, had been adjusted through the menu of the camera.
Olympus E-3 Test Photos
During the Olympus E-3 event I was able to work with the camera for an entire day and I must admit that I was nicely surprised. Not that I did not have faith in the long development period necessary to build a new D-SLR camera but more so because Olympus once again have presented a full D-SLR with its very own character. The competition is heavy and ruthless and the technique advances with big steps. The Olympus E-3 seems to fit in perfectly in the current D-SLR market but it is capable of keeping its own identity.
