Free firmware update for Leica Digilux 3 : Leica Camera AG, Solms will be providing a free firmware update for the Leica Digilux 3 on its website. The new firmware (version 2.0) offers extensive improvements regarding the performance and ergonomics of the digital SLR camera. To facilitate installation of the new firmware, Leica’s website also gives instructions on the download and update routine on the camera in the form of a pdf document. The new firmware for the Leica Digilux 3 optimizes the use of the camera for many applications. Besides additional multiple exposure functions, the update also offers, for the first time, a Mode 3 for optical stabilization that compensates camera shake when the camera is moved up- and downwards.

This mode is ideal for panning, a method of taking photographs where the camera follows a moving object. Another improvement is provided by a new mode that makes it easier to read the LCD monitor for LiveView shots when the camera is held in a low position. This setting is particularly useful for taking pictures close to the ground, for instance of flowers in bloom, or at the eye level of children or pet animals.

Further optimizations include the “Auto Review” setting - a mode without time limits - the replay zoom, the setting for the ISO film speed in AE mode and improvements for camera operation. For example, the new firmware enables easier setting of the aperture for lenses without an aperture ring, and the option of setting many other functions, such as white balance, color temperature, ISO speed or flash, with the cursor keys instead of the setting ring. Detailed information on the firmware update for the Leica Digilux 3 will be available at the Leica website.
