XeroxFootball posters printed with Xerox digital press : When the Boise State University Broncos arrived back on campus the day after their football season ended with the Fiesta Bowl victory, 10,000 color posters were ready for distribution at a gala celebration. Created on the Xerox Corporation iGen3 110 Digital Production Press, the posters featured a montage of the final plays that sealed their 43-42 overtime bowl victory. Such fast turnaround time is one of the reasons Boise State University’s Printing and Graphic Services Department purchased the flagship Xerox iGen3 digital press. It is being used to expand print services and produce jobs such as personalized direct mail campaigns and even cost-effective football trading cards.

“We recognized the shift in customer requests from offset to digital print jobs with shorter runs and quicker turnaround times, so we looked for a digital press that would be reliable and allow us to broaden the scope of services,” said Ted Bailey, manager, Printing and Graphic Services, Boise State University. “The Xerox iGen3 press stood out from competitive digital presses. It’s compatible with our existing digital workflow systems, prints near-offset quality at high speeds, and is helping us increase our print volume and ultimately, the revenue we generate for the university.” Boise State uses the Xerox iGen3 press with an EFI Fiery color server to also produce jobs including brochures, postcards, fliers, newsletters and promotional materials. According to Bailey, the Xerox iGen3 press allows his department to be more responsive to students, faculty and staff at the state’s largest university.

The department tripled its average monthly color print volume within six months of installing the Xerox iGen3 digital press in July 2006, and Bailey anticipates the digital print volume will double in 2007. The university has numerous databases and lists containing past, current and prospective student information, and is looking to produce more personalized materials to take advantage of that information and create more highly relevant print jobs. Bailey’s department uses software from XMPie, a stand-alone unit of Xerox, to develop the personalized communications. He expects to create more complex cross-media, one-to-one communication campaigns, integrating print with e-mail and the Web.

A direct mail campaign aimed at increasing student enrollment. Three different versions of a full-color postcard sent to prospective students featured graphics and personalized information on both sides. The positive response to the 55,000 postcards helped the university’s admissions department meet its enrollment goals for the 2006-07 school year. This campaign has now been extended with three additional personalized follow-up mailings including an eight-page, full-color viewbook with relevant information requested by each prospective student.

Trading cards for Boise State’s football team were traditionally produced on offset equipment and then finished by hand - a very time consuming process - for distribution at football games. Using the Xerox iGen3 press, total production time for 150,000 full-color, two-sided cards was reduced from three weeks to seven days. Not only can the trading cards be digitally collated and printed in sets to reduce finishing time, but the oversized paper capabilities of the Xerox iGen3 press allow for more cards to be printed per sheet, reducing supplies costs and making the entire production more efficient.

To help develop direct mail campaigns for the higher education and government markets, Boise State has used some ideas from the Vertical Market Kits in Xerox’s ProfitAccelerator digital business and market development resources portfolio. The department also primarily uses Xerox branded supplies for better reliability and productivity. Boise State also uses a Xerox 4110 Digital Copier/Printer to produce black-and-white classroom materials such as wire-bound course packs. Print volumes on the Xerox 4110 range from about 300,000 to 400,000 pages-per-month. Bailey said the machine is fast and reliable.
