NewsP-OLED microdisplay demonstrated at SID 2007 : MicroEmissive Displays will be demonstrating its advanced polymer OLED microdisplay technology at SID 2007. Demonstration kits for its production eyescreen products will show how the devices can be readily incorporated into wearable head-sets for personal TV and video viewing and electronic viewfinders for digital cameras, camcorders and night vision systems. The demo kits feature a series of video clips to showcase the superior image quality of MED's P-OLED technology, its vivid colours and high contrast ratio, and motion video that is free from blur and flicker. Headsets using eyescreen devices benefit further from the products' digital interface and low power consumption.

The new eyescreen ME3204 is the first device to be manufactured at MED's new production facility in Dresden, Germany. The new line is fully automated and capable of making commercial volumes of displays - up to ten million units per annum once fully ramped. MED's Professor Ian Underwood said: “Our technology has been talked and written about a great deal, and has won wide recognition in several independent awards. The buzz is getting louder now that its benefits are starting to be seen in real mass-market products of the future. We now have the production capacity to meet this growing demand and our demo kits will spread the word even more widely amongst product design engineers looking for a fast, robust design-in solution for smaller, lighter-weight, stylish products.”

Colour P-OLED QVGA microdisplay - Eyescreen ME3204
Prof Underwood, who is Chief Technology Officer of MicroEmissive Displays, presents a short course on: ‘Fundamentals of Microdisplays’ at the SID technical conference on Sunday 20th May at 15:00 - 19:00. The eyescreen ME3204 is a colour P-OLED QVGA (320 x RGB x 240) microdisplay featuring 230K dots in a compact 6 mm (0.24”) diagonal pixel array. It is mounted on a flex assembly to enable simplified design-in to end products. The eyescreen ME3204 has a two-wire serial interface, BT.656 and 8-bit serial RBG digital inputs, and runs off a single 2.5 V supply. With no backlight required, the integrated display driver electronics and digital video interface simplify integration into a wide range of systems and enable product designers to develop smaller and lighter weight products. The very high optical contrast ratio gives pictures with a vivid 3-D like appearance, and the eyescreen is effectively free from visible pixelation or ‘chicken wire effect’, thanks to this P-OLED microdisplay’s high fill factor.

About MicroEmissive Displays
MicroEmissive Displays is a leader in polymer organic light emitting diode (P-OLED) microdisplay technology. The company was founded in 1999 and has developed a unique emissive microdisplay technology by using a P-OLED layer on a CMOS substrate. In late 2004, MicroEmissive Displays floated on the Alternative Investment Market of the London Stock Exchange (AIM) following a fourth successful funding round, which raised £15.7 M. Funding has been used for proof of principle, technology development and establishing pre-production facilities in Edinburgh, culminating in the first product release and commercial shipments of MicroEmissive Displays’ eyescreen microdisplays in December 2005. MicroEmissive Displays has been awarded ISO 9001:2000 registration for the research, design, development and marketing of digital microdisplay solutions and is working towards full accreditation in 2007. MicroEmissive Displays is headquartered at the Scottish Microelectronics Centre, Edinburgh, Scotland and employs 56 people; its manufacturing plant is in Dresden, Germany. The company also has sales representatives and applications support located in Asia, the USA and Europe.

About eyescreen
MicroEmissive Displays’ eyescreen products are the world’s only polymer organic light emitting diode (P-OLED) microdisplays. The full colour eyescreen combines superb TV quality moving video images that are free from flicker, with ultra-low power consumption, enabling greatly extended battery life for the consumer. This enhancement in battery usage time made possible by the eyescreen will play a vital role in the widespread adoption of portable head-sets for personal TV and video viewing in the consumer marketplace. The innovative design of the eyescreen, with its integrated driver ICs and its digital interface, offers product design engineers a fast, robust design-in solution for smaller, lighter-weight, stylish products of the future, all for a size comparable with the pupil of the human eye.
