PhotoxelsNikon D40 SLR review at Photoxels : DIWA member Yin Wong from Photoxels has reviewed the Nikon D40 digital SLR camera. The Nikon D40 DSLR features a high-resolution 6.1-effective-megapixel Nikon DX Format CCD image sensor and a highly advanced Image Processing Engine. Nikon's 3D Color Matrix Metering II assures accurate exposure control even in difficult lighting conditions. Using its 420-pixel sensor, the Nikon D40 instantly assesses and compares each scene's brightness, contrast and color with its built-in database of information from over 30,000 real-world lighting scenarios, then instantaneously determines and sets the accurate exposure. The Nikon D40's body is light and compact, making it easy to carry anywhere.

According to Yin Wong: "The Nikon D40 has 5 ISO settings going from ISO 200 to ISO 1600, plus the ability to "boost" to a higher ISO setting dubbed "HI 1" which is equivalent to ISO 3200. At ISO 200 to 800, noise is under control and detail is preserved. Noise is also low at ISO 1600 but at the expense of some slight detail loss. The boosted ISO 3200 is very noisy. This low-noise high-ISO characteristic is a major improvement in Nikon digital cameras. Kudos to Nikon for this excellent ISO performance."

Nikon D40 SLR - Flash photography and Image quality
Yin Wong continues: "We find that the AF is very responsive and images snap quickly into focus. There is a dedicated AF-assist illuminator to aid in focusing. Some readers wondered how dark it is under that table. Well, I can not even see Bamm-Bamm in the viewfinder screen and simply rely on the Nikon D40's AF to lock focus, which it does admirably. The Nikon D40 does not incorporate a live histogram. In Playback mode, press the Multi-Selector up/down and you can view a Histogram. We find the overall image quality of the Nikon D40 up to ISO 800 to be excellent with details preserved in the shadows and highlights. ISO 1600 is very usable." About Photoxels
Photoxels was founded in 2002 by MyKhanh Wong (Owner, Editor) and Yin Wong (Contributing Editor), the editors behind Photoxels. In 2001, we went on the Web to learn about digital cameras like everyone else. But it seems that the more we read about digital cameras, the more reviews we scrutinized, and the more we searched... the more confused we became. If we were somewhat confused about which digital cameras to buy before visiting the digital camera review sites, we became even more confused after reading most of the (very) technical reviews. Slowly, one article and one review at a time, we pieced together what were really important to know about digital cameras and clarified many of the digital photography-related terminology. We decided to share what we learned on the Internet, and Photoxels was born.
