EpsonHistorical photos of Russian emperors saved by Epson : Thanks to its innovative scanning and printing technologies Epson restores historical photos and negatives of Russian Tsar Nikolay II. After the Great Social Revolution in 1917, information and photos about Russian Emperors were prohibited in New Social Russia. As a result, when migrating residents fled the country they brought documents related to the Russian Emperors with them. In 1953 Russian officers living in the USA formed the Rodina Fund. Their goal was to keep the Russian relics safe and they dreamed that one day they would be brought home to Russia. Finally in 2002, the historical documents did return home when the Rodina Fund gave them to the Russian Cultural Fund.

Among the collection presented to the RCF were old photos and glass negatives from the personal archive of the last Russian Tsar Nikolai II. They show the Tsar at his home and spending time with his family. The collection also included photos of Russian soldiers, generals and scenes of old Moscow. However, as many of the photos were over 100 years old, they had begun to deteriorate. They couldn’t be displayed in their fragile state and had to be archived carefully to prevent further damage.

Epson Perfection V750 Pro Scanner
The RCF wanted to share these historical images with the people of Russia and contacted Epson for help to restore the photos and print them for display. Using the Epson Perfection V750 Pro Scanner, the photos were scanned and digital files created. The restoration software supplied with the scanner ensured the digital files were mended and traces of dust removed. The images were then printed in black and white and sepia hues on the Stylus Pro 9800, with UltraChrome K3 ink. All the restored photos will be shared with the Russian people through an exhibition called “For Faith and Faithfulness’. The exhibition starts in March in Hanti-Mansiysk city and will then travel through the main cities of Russia.

Epson digital technologies
Olga Zemlyakova, the keeper of RCF, says,"Russians have rich traditions in the patronage of art. Epson digital technologies gives a new lease of life to these traditions. We are thankfull for the wonderful people and brilliant techniques of Epson, that have helped us to restore historical photos of a great value and make them widely available for the Russian people."

Russian Cultural Fund
Mr. Ramon Olle Chairman of the Board of Epson Europe and Managing Executive Officer of Seiko Epson Corporation says, “We are honored to take part in such an important project and to make a contribution into the rebirth of such valuable and historical memories, which would otherwise be hidden away in archives. The events in Russia in the last century have created a rich and complex history. Now we have the chance to restore them and make them available for public display. When we share memories and moments we create a strong means of communication, more powerful than the written history because we see the visual memory, the actual recorded image of certain moments of the past. From this we can imagine and share the events of the past and re-live the emotion of the images.”

Unique technologies in photography
“Today’s digital era increases the extent and the immediacy of this sharing and allows us the indefinite preservation of memories. Here, in this context, Epson applies its knowledge and unique technologies in photography, combining our strength in scanning, restoring and printing images, bringing new life to these originals which date back almost 100 years.”
