OlympusKopin electronic viewfinder for Olympus SP-550 UZ : Olympus Imaging Corporation, one of the world’s leading camera manufacturers, has selected the electronic viewfinder (EVF) from Kopin Corporation for its new SP-550 UZ, the first ultra-wide (18x) optical zoom digital camera, Kopin announced. International retail shipments of the 7.1 Megapixel SP-550 UZ began last month. The suggested retail price is $499.99. “Because of the ultra-wide zoom capability of our new camera, Olympus needed an EVF solution that would provide users with the viewing precision required throughout the entire range of the optical zoom,” according to Olympus. “For photographers, the benefits of the Kopin EVF are crystal clear.

The display produces a brilliant, natural color, distortion-free image and video capture, regardless of lighting conditions. We know that amateur and experienced photographers alike will be delighted with how this EVF complements the many advance features of our new camera.” The SP-550 UZ’s focal length extends from 28 to 504mm (35 mm camera equivalent), enabling photographers to get up close and personal with their subjects, even when they are shooting from a distant vantage point.

The new Olympus model also offers the highest burst rate of any compact digital camera, shooting at super fast 15 frames per second. Other advanced features of the SP-550 UZ are Dual Image Stabilization that eliminates blur, Pre-Capture technology to capture anything that moves, and Bright Capture Technology that allows to shoot in low light without a flash. The CyberEVF 230K incorporates in a single module all the EVF components an OEM requires: a full color microdisplay with QVGA (320 x 240) resolution, ultra-thin backlight, optics, and housing with an easy-to-use focusing mechanism. This complete EVF solution enabled Olympus to shorten the design time for its new SP-550 UZ and reduce the assembly cost.

Fan, Kopin’s president and chief executive officer. “We are delighted about the opportunity to partner with a company that, like our own, is driven by an unyielding commitment to excellence. Our relationship with Olympus represents another milestone in our goal to make the CyberEVF the EVF standard for the newest generation of high-zoom, high-resolution cameras.”
