LG ElectronicsLG to lead global 3G handset market : LG Electronics, a worldwide technology leader in mobile communications, announced that its LG-KU250 and U250 handset, a sleek and slim 3G mobile phone, was selected this year for the GSM Association’s “3G for All” campaign by a consortium of the twelve largest mobile operators during 3GSM World Congress 2007 in Barcelona, Spain. The aim of the 3G for All project, sponsored by the GSM Association (GSMA), is to make third generation mobile networks and services available to a much wider user base. It does this by lowering costs for handset makers and their component suppliers by leveraging common requirements across operators and enabling economies of scale.

“LG is very excited about collaborating with GSMA to lead the ongoing evolution and development of 3G technology worldwide,” said Dr. Skott Ahn, President and CEO of LG Electronics Mobile Communications Company. “Through this partnership, we will bring all people closer to new mobile capabilities and they will benefit from higher-quality wireless multimedia 3G services. LG will provide them with attractive and feature-rich 3G devices while at the same time breaking price barriers for subscribers in the global market.”

LG-U250 mobile phone - Availability
As the official handset of the 3G for All campaign, the LG-KU250 and U250 will be available through major operators across the globe starting this April. LG will use the campaign to strengthen and expand its presence in the global 3G market through mass supply. “The 3G for All campaign has had a great response from both handset and chipset vendors demonstrating their commitment to work with operators to drive usage of 3G services,” said Craig Ehrlich, chairman of the GSMA. “A highly-capable device that is as attractive and cost-effective as the leading 2G multimedia handsets, the LG-KU250 and U250 has clear mass-market appeal and will help fuel interest in third-generation services across the world.”

LG-KU250 3G bar-type phone
Nineteen phones from eight major handset providers were judged against eight criteria - functionality, usability, logistics, market acceptance, target price, service and support, strategic commitment and form factor. The twelve operators that selected the winning handset were Cingular Wireless, Globe Telecom, Hutchison 3G, KTF, MTN, Orange, Smart, Telecom Italian, Telefonica, Telenor, T-Mobile and Vodafone. The LG-KU250 and U250 is a 3G bar-type phone that makes it possible for customers to access a wide variety of wireless multimedia services - including video clips, audio files and other content - in less time and at a reasonable price. A supporting external memory slot makes the phone perfect for playing video and music, and its multi-tasking capability even lets customers use the phone without turning off the music. The handset, engraved with the “3G for All” campaign endorsement symbol, will be showcased at LG’s booth during 3GSM World Congress 2007.
