LG ElectronicsLG and Nortel demonstrate technological process : LG Electronics, a worldwide technology leader in mobile communications, demonstrated its LTE (Long Term Evolution) technology applied handset in cooperation with Nortel at the 3GSM World Congress in Barcelona, Spain. LTE, one of the most advanced mobile communication technologies to date, is currently in the process of 3G technology standardization by the Third Generation Partnership Project (3GPP), and is expected to be applied to next generation handsets soon. The demonstration by LG and Nortel is especially meaningful in that it shows the commercial availability of Multi Input Multi Output (MIMO) - OFDM (Orthogonal Frequency Division Modulation/Multiplexing) based LTE technology.
LG and Nortel demonstrate technological processLG handset - MIMO detection technique
The 2x2 MIMO-OFDM technology used in LG’s handset has the capability of sending 20Mbps for both uplink and downlink on a 5MHz bandwidth. In this demonstration, LG and Nortel showed data transmission at 10Mbps speed between LG’s two LTE handsets and Nortel’s base station. More than twice as fast as HSDPA, which uses the same transmission frequency, this technology could allow high definition video streaming, or downloads as fast as an MP3 file in just over one second. The LTE handset developed by LG increases the possibility of commercial use by reducing complexity without lowering OFDM and MIMO performance. In addition, this world-first demonstration by LG Electronics demonstrates LTE technologies such as uplink multi-user MIMO and SC-FDMA with low complex MIMO detection technique.

LTE 3GPP standard technology
LTE is a 3GPP standard technology toward IMT-Advanced, and it is in the process of finalizing standardization by September 2007. Its core technology is based on OFDM and MIMO which are better for transmitting broadband data over CDMA networks and for maximizing spectral efficiency. This demonstration is expected to accelerate the commercialization of MIMO-OFDM technology, which is the base of the 3G LTE system, and showcase the leading roles played in the market by LG Electronics and Nortel.
