SpirentSpirent mobile video quality assessment solution : Spirent Communications plc, a global provider of performance analysis and service assurance solutions, has introduced the industry’s first lab-based mobile video analysis solution. The APEX Wireless Multimedia Analyzer (WMA) allows operators and manufacturers to evaluate the quality of video being displayed on a mobile device prior to deployment of the device and/or the service. Rapid adoption and widespread use of new mobile video applications are closely linked to quality of experience (QoE). Unlike subjective testing of the past, APEX WMA employs proven, industry-leading video and voice analysis algorithms to enable accurate and repeatable content-based video quality assessment.

APEX WMA’s analysis allows lack of a video source and display deficiencies to be captured, issues that can result in misleading high mean opinion score (MOS) when using other methodologies. This tightly controlled, objective approach to video quality evaluation enables maximum subscriber QoE. “Spirent’s acquisition of SwissQual in 2006 gave Spirent industry-leading video analysis expertise,” commented Hesham ElHamahmy, senior director of business development, Spirent Communications. “We have leveraged this knowledge, including unique video quality algorithms developed through years of field testing, into the industry’s first lab-based solution to objectively measure the video quality delivered by mobile devices. The wireless industry is investing heavily in mobile TV, which makes the availability of APEX WMA quite timely.”

APEX WMA mobile application test tool
Among its unique capabilities, APEX WMA is the first and only mobile applications test tool to offer voice and video time alignment (lip-sync) measurement. APEX WMA’s innovative wireless multimedia fixture solves the challenge of quickly and accurately setting up mobile devices with varying shapes, sizes and form factors. Using a high resolution camera, APEX WMA provides the market’s first non-intrusive video capture tool that accurately emulates the actual user experience, with no impact on device performance. Suitable for use with mobile devices which employ any air interface technology, APEX WMA is built on Spirent’s new market-leading APEX test system architecture, featuring greatly enhanced modularity and flexibility over previous generations of test solutions.
