PMA photo imaging retailers
PMA membership is open to all firms doing a substantial portion of their business in photo imaging retailing, processing or service work. The main classes of trade in PMA are photo imaging retailers; image processors of all types; wholesale and mail order photofinishers; minilabs and 1-hour processing labs; in-house, commercial and people labs; professional school photographers; professional picture framers; scrapbook retailers; sports/event photographers; and equipment repair firms. Cooperative memberships are held by firms who manufacture and distribute products and services to the trade.

PMA related trade groups
Related trade groups, attracted to the ability to provide service to its members, became sections of PMA. These sections are: Association of Imaging Executives (AIE) (formerly APCI), Digital Imaging Marketing Association (DIMA), National Association of Photo Equipment Technicians (NAPET), Photo Imaging Education Association (PIEA), Professional Photographic Laboratories Association (PPLA), Professional Picture Framers Association (PPFA), Professional School Photographers Association International (PSPA), and the Professional Scrapbook Retailers Organization™ (PSRO). Two professional societies also exist within PMA: the Society of Photographic Consultants, whose members earn the designation Certified Photographic ConsultantTM (CPC), and the Society of Photo Finishing Engineers (SPFE), Professional Scrapbook Retailers Organization (PSRO) and Sports Photographers Association of America (SPAA). Members must pass an entrance exam demonstrating expertise in their field to enter either society.

PMA headquarters
PMA has expanded its headquarters to meet the requirements of its continuous growth. The original 7,000-square-foot headquarters building was sold and a new 15,000-square-foot headquarters located on 23 picturesque acres at 3000 Picture Place just outside the Jackson, Michigan, city limits was opened in 1980. A 10,000-square-foot addition was completed in 1985 and a 17,000-square-foot addition was added in 1996 - thus totaling 42,000 square feet.
