CESMP3 players and gaming devices perfect holiday gift : MP3 players continue to reign at the top of teens' holiday wish lists, just above video game systems, according to the 3rd Annual Teen Holiday Survey. Portable gaming devices, computers and cell phones round out the top five consumer electronics devices teens are asking for this holiday season. "This will mark yet another strong year in the growing phenomenon of portable digital audio devices, especially among the teen market," said Sean Wargo, CEA's director of industry analysis. "In fact, CEA expects more than 33 million units of MP3 devices will ship this year." The percentage of teens wanting a portable digital audio device, has doubled, rising from 8 percent to 16 percent.

Video game systems have been at a steady 14 percent for the past two years, showing teens' interest in video game systems is not wavering. Parents' impressions of their kids' wishes put video games near the top of the list, an accurate assumption given the launch of two new game consoles this season. Portable gaming devices and cell phones also qualify as hot holiday gifts again this year. While parents may be buying the technologies atop their teens' wish list, a striking 41 percent of teens plan to pay for all or most of the gifts they give with their own cash this holiday season.

Another 45 percent will pay for at least some of them. These results have the net effect of creating a much larger potential sales volume than what may be apparent from the adult data alone. This 13th Annual Holiday Purchase Survey, November 2006, was conducted between September 28 and October 1, 2006. The quantitative study was administrated via telephone interview to a random national sample of 505 U.S. teens 12 to 17 years of age. It was designed and formulated by CEA Market Research, the most comprehensive source of sales data, forecasts, consumer research and historical trends for the consumer electronics industry.
