Olympus booth at Phtokina : Olympus’s stand was large and light and eye-catching. Olympus presented its entire range, including the new line of digital compact cameras and the new Olympus E-400 digital SLR camera. We did not see many new imaging products, everything was already introduced in August, but the public had the opportunity to work with Olympus’s newest equipment. The hopes cherished by many enthusiastic and professional photographers before the Photokina opened were not really fulfilled. There have been rumours about the production of a follow-up to the first FourThirds System camera; the Olympus E-1.

Olympus E1 follow-up
This model was introduced several years ago and is slowly becoming out of date. It is high time that Olympus came up with an answer, and in a way they did, by presenting a mock up at the Photokina. This model showed the design and Olympus’s dedication to making the FourThirds System successful in the professional segment as well. It is only a pity that there were no specifications or hints of when to expect it. You need more information than that to stem your impatience!
Olympus Photokina booth
The Olympus E400 can’t complain about lack of attention. The extremely compact format and light weight were popular with visitors, and I can imagine why. Photographers often react negatively to such a light compact camera, but from a practical point of view, it is ideal. Of course, its nice to work with a big hand grip and weight makes a camera more stable, but after walking around Photokina for a week with my heavy, fully equipped digital SLR, any prejudices I may have had melted away like snow on a sunny morning.

Olympus E-400 DSLR
The Olympus E-400 has to cope with some stiff competition. Take the Canon EOS 400D, derived from the successful EOS 350D, the Nikon D80 with its high quality techniques taken straight from the professional segment, or the new Pentax K10D that took many of us by surprise with a high quality DSLR. The Olympus E-400 will be widely available in October/November… we shall see how the battle progresses.
