CeWe ColorDigital photos from CeWe photo services : CeWe color, Europe’s leading photo services company, wants to promote demand for digital photos in future with a comprehensive price offensive. With prices for digital photos starting at 9 cents per photo, the company from Oldenburg is paving the way towards a new price dimension for photo retailers. Nowadays only an average of 24 % of the 480 digital snapshots taken is printed onto photo paper, while 76 % of these photos remain on PCs o rare deleted again after a while. In an effort to get more digital photos “out of the digital cameras”, cewe color is focussing on an attractive starting price of 9 cents for digital photos in its Europe-wide campaign.

”We adapted to the changing needs of a digital photographic market in good time,” emphasises Dr. Rolf Hollander, CEO of the cewe color Group. While cewe color innovations and developments in the 70s and 80s were primarily targeted towards optimising chemical processes and technical procedures with the corresponding machines and devices, in the 90s the corporate group concentrated its efforts more and more on the marketing of new products and services. In 1997 cewe color was the first company worldwide to present a photo station for reading data out of digital cameras and for ordering photos. This was followed by the Internet portal PhotoWorld as early as in 1998. The corporate group was awarded a marketing and innovation prize for this product.

Industrial photofinishing brings great cost benefits for digital photos
“We as market and technological leader are in a position to produce digital photos at far less expense in our industrial lab than those who supply photos from other print systems,” Dr. Hollander points out. In comparison to the cost of printing at home or instant printing in a store (kiosk), at an average of between 20 cents and 60 cents, a starting price of 9 cents could set standards on what is still a new digital photo market. Besides, photos from an industrial lab are miles ahead when it comes to quality too. Digital photos are attractive thanks to the brilliant colours and a high degree of light resistance which lasts for decades.

Simple methods for placing orders
“We consider simplifying the methods of ordering to be the most important factor when it comes to stimulating the digital photo market. Many consumers are not aware that it is just as easy to have digital photos developed as those from films,“ Dr. Rolf Hollander reports. This is the very reason why those responsible at cewe focussed all their attention on making the methods of ordering digital photos as simple as possible and above all, of designing these methods so that they do not differ from what consumers are used to. In other words: classical photo envelopes are used in the usual manner at the more than 60,000 retail partners of cewe color in Europe.

Methods of ordering in stores
Customers have a choice of various methods of placing orders in stores. They can either hand in a home-burned CD or the memory card of their digital camera in a photo envelope as they always have done. The memory card will be returned to customers together with their order. For those who do not wish to hand out their memory card or burn a CD themselves, photos can simply be ordered with the help of one of the more than 15,000 order stations (DigiFoto-Makers) in retail stores. These stations read the image data from the memory card and then burn a special CD which also comprises all of the order details. The CD is then simply put into a photo envelope, just like a memory card. The CD will then be returned to customers with their photos and a Photo Index should they wish to place follow-up orders.

Ordering in the Internet
CeWe color, as a leader in innovations in the area of photographic services, also supports the placing of orders in the Internet. Customers can either download free order software from the cewe website onto their own PC or they can compile their order direct on the website of one of the 60,000 cewe color trade partners and then place their order online.

”My cewe photo world” free CD
The “my cewe photo world” software guarantees even more convenience and hence even more pleasure in taking photos. The software is available free as a download from the Internet under www.cewe.eu. It contains order software for digital photos, posters and photo gifts on the one hand and the photobook software on the other hand. The photobook software can be used to design a personal photobook and of course to order it online. All in all a successful service package – one which supplements the attractive price offer of 9 cents and should trigger a genuine run on digital photos.
