AppleApple Aperture 1.5 : Apple, who was noticeably well visited in general, introduced a new version of Aperture at its press meeting: Apple Aperture 1.5. Most of us had expected Apple to come up with a new update, but were not sure about what exactly would be improved or renewed. What was remarkable was the seamless integration with iLife '06 and iWork '06, giving permanent direct access to pictures. There was also support for XMP meta data and an integrated export-API, with which Aperture workflow can be extended with programs and applications from other manufacturers. During the Photokina there were demonstrations of all sorts of plug-ins from leading companies, including Getty Images, iStockphoto, Pictage, Flickr, PhotoShelter, DigitalFusion, Soundslides en Connected Flow.

These plug-ins offer a series of print, publication and storage workflows that use this new architecture. One important improvement was the flexibility with which RAW, JPEG and TIFF images can be managed in Apple Aperture 1.5. The construction of the new 'open library' system means that files can be saved anywhere you want. This also means that pictures can be saved on other disk locations, such as external disks, CDs or DVDs. One innovative invention is that it is now possible to show high resolution preview pictures on location, so that the pictures can be checked, assessed, ordered or shown in a slide show, while the master pictures are safely being stored at work, the studio or home.

Apple Aperture v1.5 software - Luminance based filter
Some of the powerful new processing options in Aperture 1.5 are an advanced luminance based filter which gives extremely high quality when bringing edges into focus and a new colour adjustment tool that allows the photographer to set the tint, saturation and luminance of specific colour reaches within separate depictions.

Apple Aperture 1.5 - Loop function & Processing settings
The popular loop function has been extended with screen regulators, a supple zoom function with an enlargement percentage of up to 1600 percent and a new option with which the tool can be disconnected from the cursor when making changes. Separate processing settings can now be saved as pre-settings that are automatically applied via a menu commando so that photographers can make quick and easy standard adjustments to pictures.

Apple Aperture 1.5 - Price & Availability
At €299, Apple Aperture is not cheap, but it does give you a lot of innovative digital imaging solutions and is a valuable addition for enthusiastic amateurs and professional photographers. Anyone using an older version of Aperture can look forward to a free upgrade!
