FotoNationRed Eye reduction Technology : FotoNation, a imaging and connectivity solutions company for the digital photography industry, announced that its patented in-camera red-eye detection and correction technology has surpassed an installed base of over 50 million digital cameras. FotoNation red-eye reduction technology is shipping in digital cameras from the industry’s leading brands, including Kodak, Nikon, Pentax, Sanyo and Samsung among others. “164 million digital cameras with 4 megapixels or more have shipped since 2004,” said Ron Glaz, Program Director for IDC’s Digital Capture Devices and Photofinishing Research. Based on this finding, the FotoNation red-eye reduction technology is commanding over 30% of this market segment.
Red Eye reduction technology FotoNation Patent portfolio
FotoNation has developed a strong patent portfolio in this field, including U.S. Patents #6,407,777 and #7,042,505 for “Red-Eye Filter Method and Apparatus.” Approximately 20 additional patents are pending for the company in the U.S., Europe and the Far East. FotoNation has also won many accolades and awards for this innovative technology, including the coveted 2006 European IST Award. "This is a significant milestone for our company and it reflects the industry’s recognition of the strength of our implementation and intellectual property," said Eran Steinberg, CEO of FotoNation.

Embedded red-eye reduction technology
FotoNation embedded red-eye reduction technology finds and digitally corrects red eye caused by a reflection of the flash off the cornea of the eye. When photographing in low light, the pupils enlarge causing the red-eye flaw. With the company’s automatic in-camera red-eye technology, the problem is instantly fixed, eliminating the need for using a pre-flash or subsequent retouching of the image on a computer.
